Today machining relies heavily on CNC machine for conventional job, but very selective machines are made for sculptured wooden surfaces. Though there are some CNC machines specially for machining sculptured work but their cost are way beyond the limit of artists. This book presents a method of tool path planning for machining complex sculptured surfaces by triangular mesh offset for cheap and efficient NC- machine which can be used by artists easily without learning its technical. Once the surface is offset by ball nosed milling cutter radius, the tool path planning is performed by ray intersection method separately for roughing and finishing pass with variable pitch, assuming the milling cutter as a ray which intersect the offset STL surface, to generate the cutter location points, the CL points are arrange systematically to generate tool path for 3 Axis NC-Milling Lathe and 3 Axis NC-Vertical Milling for raster and circular milling. Test pieces are verified by actual machining and graphical representation.

Implementation of a Remote Controller for a Three Axis Milling Machine

In this book, a CNC system is designed, implemented and tested to control the operation of a laboratory milling machine having three axes that are moved by using a stepper motor attached to each axis. The designed control system consists of two PCs (server PC and client PC), the server PC is connected to the machine through its parallel port by using designed interface circuit. The client PC is used to control and monitor the machine operations remotely, and a network/internet connection is used to establish a connection with the server PC to control the machine. The required shape on the wooden piece is drawn by using AUTOCAD or 3D MAX and it is saved in DXF format, then that file is fed to the machine controller either by the operator or by the connected client PC, then that shape will be machined. The CNC system used developed algorithms that read the DXF file fed to the machine, extracts (line, circle, arc, ellipse or polyline) shapes from the file and generates commands to move the machine axes, so that these shapes can be machined. The designed CNC system is tested by feeding different DXF files to the controller to be machined and the parts resulted are accepted.

This Book discuss of the Optimization of tool life in milling using Design of experiment implemented to model the end milling process that are using solid carbide flat end mill as the cutting tool and stainless steels s.s-304 as material due to predict the resulting of Tool life. Data is collected from CNC milling machines were run by 8 samples of experiments using DOE approach that generate table design in MINITAB packages. The inputs of the model consist of feed, cutting speed and depth of cut while the output from the model is Tool life calculated by taylor’s life equation. The model is validated through a comparison of the experimental values with their predicted counterparts. The optimization of the tool life is studied to compare the relationship of the parameters involve. Cutting speed is the greater influence to the tool fatigue criterion which is result the performance of the cutting tool. The proved technique opens the door for a new, simple and efficient approach that could be applied to the calibration of other empirical models of machining.

Micro-milling is a precision milling technology where the cutting parameters are in micro scale. It has been increasingly applied to modern industry, from aerospace to bioengineering. Tool condition monitoring (TCM) in micro milling poses new challenges compared to conventional CNC machining, due to the high tool wear rate and high precision requirement associated with the features at micro-level. In this book, a generic noise-robust system is developed for the micro-milling tool condition monitoring. Mathematical tools such wavelet analysis and independent component analysis (ICA) have been applied to analyze the cutting force associated with different tool conditions. Continuous Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are adapted to model the tool wearing process and estimate the tool states based on the force features. Experimental studies on the tool state estimation in the micro-milling of pure copper and steel illustrate the effectiveness these approaches. This book serves as a valuable reference to the graduate students and the engineers engaged in the research in precision manufacturing, automation and control, and signal processing.

An experimental investigation has been done on the CO2 laser in order to study the feasibility of applying this laser to the water-jet-guided laser cutting technique. The characteristics such as water jet quality, reduction of heat affected zone, laser beam divergence, total internal reflection of light in water jet, and limitations in using the CO2 laser in the laser micro-jet cutting technique are studied computationally and experimentally. The chamber is designed using CATIA, analyzed with the ANSYS and fabricated by the CNC machining with employing AA6061. The value of 50 mm is found to be reliable upper limit for cutting distance. The 500W power and 10.6µm wavelength for CO2 laser are not suitable for coupling with water jet because of high heat absorption of water. The couplings of the laser light and the water jet have been achieved experimentally. Heat absorption of water, the divergence of the laser beam, and some of the laser characteristics have been recognized as the main limitations of this technique. The study is much relevant to cutting industry and precision manufacturing, where it’s necessary to get fine and precise cutting surface with minimum heat damage.

Kinematic Geometric Modeling for Free-form Motion Generation

This work presents new approaches for motion design and analysis suitable for the integration of Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and Computerized Numerical Control (CNC). Therefore, not only shape but also kinematic information is conveyed in an efficient manner that can be easily implemented in CAD/CAM systems and eventually interpreted by CNC manufacturing equipment. By using dual quaternions, quaternions and planar quaternions, the displacements of a rigid body in Cartesian space are mapped into points in the image space of displacements, transforming the kinematic problem of motion interpolation into a geometric problem where the powerful techniques for curve and surface interpolation from Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) can be readily applied. Three techniques are developed using quaternion biarcs, a four point interpolatory subdivision scheme and its tensor product version. A preliminary approach for mechanism simulation using subdivision schemes is also attempted. The results obtained have applications in CNC tool path generation, robot path planning, and computer animation.

In this study we analyzed the IP addresses streams in a backbone router to predict the future IP addresses and pre-fetch them into the cache (forwarding) table before the router requests them. Thus, a new replacement algorithm was developed based on the prediction of the IP addresses. We showed how we collected real IP addresses from data traffic in a backbone router. We compared the previous replacement algorithms against our new technique. Also, the Implementation of a backbone router using our algorithm is proposed. Monoclinic potassium lutetium double tungstate doped with thulium

Monoclinic potassium lutetium double tungstate KLuW is established as new laser host for Tm, Yb and Ho active ions due to (i) its very high values of absorption and emission cross sections (ii) its relatively large Lu-Lu distances allowing high ion concentration with minimum fluorescence quenching effects and (iii) the long lifetime of the upper laser level ensuring high energy storage. These characteristics are exploited in this work using Tm as active ion to generate laser emission at 1.94 µm. The local maximum of water absorption at this wavelength makes this laser interesting for medical and atmospheric applications. Polarization switching, dual-wavelength operation, vibronic laser, thin-disk laser design, passive Q-switching and the laser-tissue interaction of the 1.94 µm Tm:KLuW laser are demonstrated in this book.

QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF CO2 LASER MACHINING

Laser machining encompasses laser drilling, laser marking, laser grooving and laser engraving, which is broadly used in industries for its extensive machining potential; flexibility, high accuracy, precise, and can cut almost any materials. It works by directing the output of a high power laser beam onto the materials to be cut where, the materials then either melts, burns or vaporizes away leaving an edge with a high quality surface finish of the desired shape and geometry. In this empirical research investigation, the EN-32 mild steel with nominal thickness of 2.5mm and 5.0 mm were profiled using four by eight feet CO2 laser cutting machine. The significant effect of design parameters was investigated to produce almost perfect and clean cutting of end product. This process was then analyzed and set in order to achieve satisfactory part quality of a locally established metal cutting industry. Quality examinations in the aspects of geometrical / dimensional errors (kerf width) and cut quality (surface roughness) have been investigated. The findings can be widely used and benefited by metal cutting industries or researchers of relevant field.

Optimization of a 2.5D milling process is generally considered to be one of the most significant issues for high-speed machining during mass production to amplify productivity and quality of production. Total time spent during 2.5D milling primarily comprises of productive and non-productive time. The productive time, cost and quality of production is highly influenced by machining parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate, width of cut (step over), depth of cut, tool diameter etc. Also selection of optimal machining conditions for better machining process efficiency is one of the key factors for this problem. The objective of the present work is to identify and organize the controllable variables such that there is minimum effect of uncontrollable or noise variables on the process performance. The machining processes which maintain balance between cost and quality of production are presumed to be efficient. The movements of tool are synchronized with the help of automatically generated CNC codes. In the present work an attempt also been made on minimization of non-productive time by synchronizing cutting tool movements for malti pockets job problems.

Numerical simulation of interaction of short pulse lasers with plasma

Development of high power lasers opened a new era of scientific innovations. Now it is possible to study the matter properties under extreme conditions applicable to large number of potential applications. The field of laser-plasma interaction is very vast and wealthy in content. In this thesis we present three basic aspects related to the subject.We have developed a new model for laser interaction with solid targets which is applicable for the laser pulse duration ranging from femtoseconds to picoseconds. The benchmarking of the model is done by testing various special cases. The absorption model is coupled with one dimension radiation hydrodynamics, opacity and equation of state data in order to simulate various experiments. The interaction of laser with atomic cluster is also investigated in this monograph. A new hydrodynamic model for laser cluster interaction is presented. Our model takes into account the radial non-uniformity of the expanding cluster under the influence of incident laser. Finally the laser induced ion acceleration is also studied using one dimensional particle-in-cell code.

Investigation of the CO2 Laser Cutting of Glass Woven Fabrics

The laser cutting process is one of the most established processes and has a great number of applications in the automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding and material processing industries. It can be used for several processes such as cutting, engraving and welding for metals and nonmetals. This book investigates experimentally the quality of laser cutting for the Glass Woven Fabrics (GWF) composite material, with the use of a continuous wave carbon dioxide (CO2) laser (10.6µm wavelength). A CO2 laser was used to cut 4 mm thickness of GWF panels. The quality of the cut has been monitored by measuring the Kerf Width (KW) and Material Removal Rate (MRR). This work aims at evaluating processing parameters, such as the laser power, cutting speed, stand-off distance and air pressure, for the laser cutting оf GWF. Fоr the experimental design, the Taguchi method and ANOVA has been used, in which the experiments are performed as per standard orthogonal arrays (OA) while the optimum level of input process parameters are decided on the basis of a statistical analysis of the experimental results.
