Factors influencing hulling among coffee farmers in Masaka district

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors underlying the adoption of coffee hulling by farmers, and to estimate the price elasticities for hulled and unhulled coffee sold. 300 farmers were randomly selected and interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The censored Tobit model was used to analyse the factors that influence the sale of hulled coffee. Two OLS models for the marketed supply of unhulled and hulled coffee were estimated and their corresponding elasticities determined. The results indicate that higher market prices of hulled coffee positively and significantly (p>0.01) enhance the proportion of hulled coffee sold, while distance from the farmer’s home to the coffee processing factory and drought conditions during the season significantly (p>0.05) reduce the proportion of hulled coffee sold. The sale of hulled coffee was found to be more price responsive than the sale of unhulled coffee both in the short and long run. Based on these findings the study recommends supporting the development of farmer institutions as a way of promoting the uptake of coffee hulling and value addition to improve farmers’ incomes.

Characterization of resistance to Coffee Rust and Coffee Berry Disease

Coffee leaf rust (CLR) and coffee berry disease (CBD) are the most economically important diseases affecting coffee production particularly in Africa. A study was undertaken to evaluate the available coffee germplasm for resistance to CLR and CBD and to determine the genetic diversity between resistant lines and commercial cultivars in Rwanda. Screening for resistance to CBD was done using the hypocotyls inoculation test while selection for resistance to CLR was carried out using the leaf disc inoculation method. The genetic diversity was assessed using both Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR). Genetic distances generated for each pair of varieties were subjected to cluster analysis. Results showed highly significant differences between genotypes in resistance to CLR and CBD. Additionally, commercial coffee varieties in Rwanda and CLR and CBD resistant varieties were genetically quite distinct. Crosses should be made between genetically distant susceptible and resistant varieties to derive hybrids that combine resistance with marked levels of heterosis particularly for yield.

This book is focused on coffee marketing in India. In the earlier times coffee marketing was mostly unorganized and only some of the growers were in a position to sell coffee at a remunerative price. Marketing problems prompted many growers to make efforts for an organized system. The efforts resulted in the genesis of Coffee Board in 1935. Board was holding complete control on the marketing as it was mandatory for the growers to surrender all their produce to the coffee pool. Board was conducting separate auctions for internal sale and export. This system worked well for nearly 50 years. Mounting marketing costs and delay in realization of returns prompted some growers to demand for freedom to sell on their own. In 1993, Government of India took a decision to liberalize coffee trade and initiated the process of allowing growers to sell their produce by themselves. By 1995 liberalization was complete. During this transition from controlled to liberalized marketing there were some gainers and also some losers. This study attempted to understand how the process worked for different players in the Indian coffee sector.

Today, coffee is one of the most popular and most consumed beverages worldwide. We studied the effect of different concentrations of coffee on peak expiratory flow rate(PEFR), blood pressure and pulse rate in an attempt to determine some physiological effects of coffee intake. 18 apparently healthy adult males, age range 20 to 30 years, were recruited for the study over a three day period. Varying concentrations (2g, 4g and 6g) of Nescafe Instant Coffee were administered. 2g coffee concentration was given on the first day, 4g on the second day and 6g on the third. The control measurements were taken on the first day of the experimental procedure in all subjects. This study suggests that 2g of coffee does not give maximum cardio-respiratory effects. The peak effect that coffee can exhibit on PEFR and cardiovascular system was seen from 4g coffee concentration; but there was no significant difference when compared with 6g concentration. Only in DBP and PR were significant changes observed when 2g concentration was administered. It further indicates that, mild doses of coffee confer benefits on airflow in the lungs. While higher doses are also beneficial in improving airflow
