Today machining relies heavily on CNC machine for conventional job, but very selective machines are made for sculptured wooden surfaces. Though there are some CNC machines specially for machining sculptured work but their cost are way beyond the limit of artists. This book presents a method of tool path planning for machining complex sculptured surfaces by triangular mesh offset for cheap and efficient NC- machine which can be used by artists easily without learning its technical. Once the surface is offset by ball nosed milling cutter radius, the tool path planning is performed by ray intersection method separately for roughing and finishing pass with variable pitch, assuming the milling cutter as a ray which intersect the offset STL surface, to generate the cutter location points, the CL points are arrange systematically to generate tool path for 3 Axis NC-Milling Lathe and 3 Axis NC-Vertical Milling for raster and circular milling. Test pieces are verified by actual machining and graphical representation.

Implementation of a Remote Controller for a Three Axis Milling Machine

In this book, a CNC system is designed, implemented and tested to control the operation of a laboratory milling machine having three axes that are moved by using a stepper motor attached to each axis. The designed control system consists of two PCs (server PC and client PC), the server PC is connected to the machine through its parallel port by using designed interface circuit. The client PC is used to control and monitor the machine operations remotely, and a network/internet connection is used to establish a connection with the server PC to control the machine. The required shape on the wooden piece is drawn by using AUTOCAD or 3D MAX and it is saved in DXF format, then that file is fed to the machine controller either by the operator or by the connected client PC, then that shape will be machined. The CNC system used developed algorithms that read the DXF file fed to the machine, extracts (line, circle, arc, ellipse or polyline) shapes from the file and generates commands to move the machine axes, so that these shapes can be machined. The designed CNC system is tested by feeding different DXF files to the controller to be machined and the parts resulted are accepted.

Theory of Curvature Effects on End-Milling

The desire to write this book is precipitated by a laboratory milling project that involves a combination of slots of various radii that exhibited chatter when the milling process got to the small-radii slotting. A quick survey of literature led to the realization that no work that addresses this problem exists. In this work, modelling of circular end-milling is conducted to reveal the effects curvature could have on milling chatter stability. Rectilinear feed end-milling is found to be circular milling of infinite radius. Curvature has a suppressive effect on chatter stability that gets stronger with lowering of spindle speed thus it is recommended that experimental scheme for validation of effects of curvature should be done at low spindle speeds. Tools of higher natural frequencies are derived to be more resistant to curvature effects. It is hoped that this work will stimulate both theoretical and experimental research in the machining community regarding curvature effects on end-milling. Students and practicing machinists that are still learning modelling and stability analysis of milling processes will benefit immensely from this work especially from chapter 1.

Despite the inbuilt advantages offered by 5-axis machining, the manufacturing industry has not widely adopted this technology due to the high cost of machines and insufficient support from CAD/CAM systems. Companies are used to 3-axis machining and the operators are in many cases not yet ready for 5-axis machining in terms of training and programming. An effective solution for this 5 axis problem is a graduated migration through the use of 3+2-axis machining. The objective of this research is to develop and implement a machining technique that uses the simplicity of 3-axis tool positioning and the flexibility of 5-axis tool orientation, to machine complex surfaces. This work presents the application of well known methods from Pattern Recognition and newly developed methods by the current author that were adapted for surface machining. This work includes an explanation of the procedures required to determine an appropriate tool orientation, feed direction, tool path trajectory and tool parameters for patch-by-patch machining. These parameters are determined independently for each patch and aim at reducing the time required to machine a surface while maintaining the surface specific.

Simulating the Hygromechanical Response of Wood

This PhD thesis treats modeling of the hygromechanical response of wood. To do so it is crucial to have accurate models for the moisture transport. Moisture transport in the cellular structure of wood consists of a combination of water vapor transport and bound water transport. In present work these are modeled as two diffusion equations, which are coupled through sorption. Such a model is able to describe so-called non-Fickian effects. Sorption is known to be hysteretic, which must be taken into account in order to describe changes of the moisture content in relation to water vapor pressure accurately. In present work a new sorption hysteresis model suitable for implementation into a numerical method is developed. The sorption hysteresis model is combined with the multi-Fickian model allowing simultaneous simulation of non-Fickian effects and hysteresis. Furthermore temperature dependencies of the model are considered. The latter part of this work deals with the transverse couplings in creep of wood based on experimental observations. A new orthotropic creep model, which provides directionally independent creep rates, is proposed.

By using water and oil quench, results will shows the hardness of the steels is increased after heat treatment. Continuous cooling treatment at different rate on steels will results formation of the martensite and decomposition of the microstructure.

Thermal Conductivity of Nanofluids

This experimental work was done to measure the thermal conductivity of nanofluids (TiO2-water, ZnO-water and Al2O3-water). The thermal conductivity is measured experimentally, compared with the theoretical models for each nanofluid at each particle volume fraction. The unmatched hike is obtained in the thermal conductivity through nanofluid. To perform the experiment the nanofluid is prepared at different volume fractions of 0.25%, 0.50%, 0.75% and 1% of TiO2, ZnO and Al2O3 nanoparticles with base fluid water. The nano particles are mixed with water in ultrasonic vibration mixer (UVM) machine. The mixing of nano particles is done through ultrasonication. The measurements are taken at room temperature with the help of Thermal property analyzer KD2 Pro device which is most accurate device to measure the thermal properties of the liquids as well solids. The results of this experimental work shows that thermal conductivity increases 22% for TiO2 nanofluid, 17% for ZnO nanofluid and 24% for Al2O3 nanofluid with base fluid water for 1% volume fraction of nanofluid.

The motorized spindles are equipped with built-in motors for better power transmission and balance to achieve high-speed operation .The thermal deformation of the spindle owe to the heat decreases the accuracy of high-speed machine tool greatly. The dynamic characteristics are affected by thermal load, preload, centrifugal and gyroscopic effects. So the Finite element analysis is important to characterize the thermal and dynamic behavior of the high speed motorized spindle. The methodology for the thermal and dynamic analysis is arrived from the literature survey. Thermal analysis is conducted for finding temperature distribution, radial and axial deflection due to thermal load for different operating speeds in high speed motorized spindle using ANSYS. The temperatures which are taken from the ANSYS results at bearings and motor location in the high speed motorized spindle are validated with the data which are taken experimentally. Modal analysis is performed for finding natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes of the high speed motorized spindle with the effect of the axial preload, centrifugal and gyroscopic effects using ANSYS.

This is a downwind turbine project which is 3D unsteady aerodynamical experiment ( took at NASA AMES wind tunnel 2001) of horizontal axis wind turbine of phase VI baseline case of NREL USA and motivation of work package WP4 of IEA (International Energy Agency)-task number 29. The turbine with tower and nacelle is simulated using RANS and URANS. Local Angle Of Attack, Axial Induction factor, relative velocity, components of normal and tangential forces are calculated for 3D rotating blade. Discussion about 3D tower-blade interaction, boundary layer transitions and stall phenomenon has been done within this research work. This research work would be very exciting not only for better development in wind turbine design and performance characteristics but also for developing better CFD approaches to solve the flow near wall and to optimize the CFD methods.

This work presents an investigation of the multifunctional alkylation chemistry of the metalloligand [Pt2(µ-S)2(PPh3)4]. [Pt2(µ-S)2(PPh3)4] is known to be one of the best building block for multimetallic molecules through the exceptional ligating ability of the two sulfide centres to virtually any transition and main group metal fragment. Extension of the synthetic versatility of [Pt2(µ-S)2(PPh3)4] to multifunctional non-metallic positive centres was explored in this work. By using Electrospray Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) as the main monitoring tool, [Pt2(µ-S)2(PPh3)4] was employed as a productive template for generating structurally and chemically diverse thiolate-platinum complexes. Multifunctional organic groups which include semi- and thiosemicarbazone, urea, isocyanate, guanidine, ketones, amines, amides and polymers with suitable electrophilic branches reacts with [Pt2(µ-S)2(PPh3)4] by alkylation of one or both sulfide centres to generate the corresponding functionalised derivatives containing thiolate ligands bonded to platinum.

Mesoporous silica (MPS) thin films are attractive for application as low-? interlayer dielectric (ILD) in integrated circuits. However these films are susceptible to instabilities in electrical behavior due to water uptake and copper diffusion. This work discusses the electrical, chemical, and thermal instabilities, Cu diffusion, and adhesion of these materials for evaluating and enabling their use for applications as future ILD in device wiring. Thermal stability of functional groups and adhesion of these films with Cu are also key questions for integration of these dielectrics into real devices. We do try to address these questions here for few type of functional MPS films. Pore structure is another key parameter in defining mechanical and electrical performance of MPS films. In this work we used MPS films with 3D-Cubic pores for most of the studies. Differences in properties of MPS films with pores oriented parallel to substrate (2D-hexagonal) and MPS films with cubic fashion (3D-cubic) pores are discussed towards the end. In summary, this work shows ways to tailor electrical and mechanical properties of MPS low-? dielectrics for future applications.

Optimization of a 2.5D milling process is generally considered to be one of the most significant issues for high-speed machining during mass production to amplify productivity and quality of production. Total time spent during 2.5D milling primarily comprises of productive and non-productive time. The productive time, cost and quality of production is highly influenced by machining parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate, width of cut (step over), depth of cut, tool diameter etc. Also selection of optimal machining conditions for better machining process efficiency is one of the key factors for this problem. The objective of the present work is to identify and organize the controllable variables such that there is minimum effect of uncontrollable or noise variables on the process performance. The machining processes which maintain balance between cost and quality of production are presumed to be efficient. The movements of tool are synchronized with the help of automatically generated CNC codes. In the present work an attempt also been made on minimization of non-productive time by synchronizing cutting tool movements for malti pockets job problems.

Since the dawn of civilization, various plants have been utilized for their medicinal and edible values throughout the world. Sappan tree and ginger plant are two such plants which have been known for their antioxidative, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic effects. Since antioxidants of dietary origin may not be adequate to promote health benefits, inclusion of these substances in drinking water may be of high significance. The present study was taken with this intention to evaluate the biological properties of sappan wood and a mixture of sappan wood and dried ginger in drinking water. The study showed that a decoction of sappan wood as well the combination of sappan wood and dried ginger had hypoglycemic, lipid lowering and antioxidant effect. Hence it promotes cardiovascular health.

Literature survey clearly indicates that fresh water prawns, despite being important member of food chain, good bio-indicator and having high economical value, have not been properly studied in relation to metal toxicity. Considering economical and good bio-indicator value of fresh water prawns, present work has been taken into account to evaluate behavioural, haematological and histopathological effects of mercuric chloride and nickel chloride on Macrobrachium lamarrei and Macrobrachium dayanum, prawn species, abundantly available in Lucknow. The research work incorporated in present thesis is represented in three sections. Section-I deals with bioassay experiments; Section-II deals with behavioural, haematological and histopathological effects of mercuric chloride while Section-III deals with behavioural haematological and histopathological effects of nickel chloride on fresh water prawns, Macrobrachium lamarrei and Macrobrachium dayanum, good bio-indicators and potential animals for fresh water aquaculture.

This document will outline a design work for a desalination system using a slow sand filter as a pre-treatment and an evaporation pond for the brine disposal. This technology will provide sufficient fresh water for the needs of a small rural community in Jordan at a small fractional cost to the government of Jordan. The analysis of this project should be especially useful to scientific community as well as anyone else who may consider renewable energy systems for the desalination of sea water.

The limited water resources in arid areas have led to the use of low-quality irrigation water in agriculture which may reduce crop yields and damage the environment. This study is focused on a greenhouse concept with integrated water desalination considered for small scale applications at remote locations in areas where only saline water is available. In this greenhouse the roof light transmission is reduced as solar radiation is absorbed by a layer of flowing water on a glass covered by a top glass. Fresh water is evaporated, condensed on the top glass and collected at the roof eaves. The main objective of this monograph is to analyze the fresh water production as well as the crop growth capacity and water demand for the concept. Included are theoretical and experimental studies with a focus on the total system performance and design. The work also includes perspectives on the potential for more advanced cover materials and system concepts of particular interest for further development into future applications. Economic analyses including water costs and grower revenues indicate that this concept competes well with solar collector based technologies for water desalination.

This Book discuss of the Optimization of tool life in milling using Design of experiment implemented to model the end milling process that are using solid carbide flat end mill as the cutting tool and stainless steels s.s-304 as material due to predict the resulting of Tool life. Data is collected from CNC milling machines were run by 8 samples of experiments using DOE approach that generate table design in MINITAB packages. The inputs of the model consist of feed, cutting speed and depth of cut while the output from the model is Tool life calculated by taylor’s life equation. The model is validated through a comparison of the experimental values with their predicted counterparts. The optimization of the tool life is studied to compare the relationship of the parameters involve. Cutting speed is the greater influence to the tool fatigue criterion which is result the performance of the cutting tool. The proved technique opens the door for a new, simple and efficient approach that could be applied to the calibration of other empirical models of machining.
