Designing a real-time visual tracking system to perform control is a complex task because of a large amount of streaming video data must be transmitted and processed immediately when tracing the target. Usually, building such visual servoing systems requires the application of high-cost specialized hardware and the development of complicated visual control software. In this book, a novel real-time visual servo control system is presented. The system uses the stereo vision consisting of two calibrated cameras to acquire images of the target, and applies the continuously adaptive vision tracking algorithm to provide feedbacks of the object''s real-time position at a high frame rate; and then employs a robot manipulator controlled by a fuzzy reasoning system to acquire the target. The collision avoidance method is also presented in this book for wheeled mobile robot navigation in indoors environments using feature extracting and matching algorithm. The mobile robot’s direction is dynamically adjusted according to its distance from the target and obstacles. The proposed real-time 3D visual servoing framework can be applied to the unmanned vehicle, robotics control and surveillance.

Due to complexity and vagueness of manufacturing process, fuzzy logic controller is employed to vary cutting parameters in real-time during manufacturing process depending on the emanating cutting forces. The control scheme aims at maximizing on the material removal rate and at the same time reducing on the rate at which the tool wears out. Also the need to have a constant machine operator to supervise the machining process is elimintated.

Measurement of Cutting Tool Condition by Surface Texture Analysis

Present work is an experimental investigation is presented for accomplishing surface texture analysis using machine vision based system for measuring the condition of cutting tool. Analysis of machined surface images of different materials by turning and shaping process at different wear conditions cutting tool, grabbed using CCD camera are presented. An amplitude parameters based approach for analysis of machined surfaces is proposed. Machined surfaces with different wear conditions of the cutting tool i.e., sharp, semidull and dull are investigated by using surface metrology software and also with conventional method using stylus instrument for comparative purpose. However, considerably less work has been performed on the development of surface texture of machined work piece that provide information on the condition of the cutting tool, employed in machining the surface. A non contact method using machine vision is presented for inspecting surface roughness. A strong correlation between tool wear and surface roughness of the machined surfaces is found.It is proved that,this approach is effective in measuring the condition of the cutting tool through amplitude parameters.

A reliable identity management system is urgently needed in order to combat the epidemic growth in identity theft and to meet the increased security requirements in a variety of applications. Biometric authentication establishes the identity of a person based on “who he is", rather than “what he knows" or “what he possess”. There are usually two very serious criticisms against biometric technology that have not been addressed satisfactorily, biometrics are not secrets and enrolled biometric templates are not revocable. The first fact implies that the attacker has a ready access to the legitimate biometric trait (e.g., facial image finger print of an enrolled user of the biometric system) and, therefore, could fraudulently inject it into the biometric system to gain access. The second fact implies that when a biometric trait has been “compromised”, the legitimate user has no recourse to revoking the trait. An experimental and theoretical research work on abrasive water jet oscillation cutting of ductile materials, mild steel and aluminum, was conducted at the water jet laboratory of IRIS as part of a PhD project. The general objectives of the PhD project were improving and modeling the cutting performance in AWJ machining using nozzle oscillation Techniques. Optimizing the cutting process involves improving the texture and integrity of the surface produced by abrasive water jet cutting and increasing the depth of the smooth cutting zone as well as the total depth of cut without sacrificing the cutting speed or the need to increase pump supply pressure beyond that can be achieved with current pumping technology. To achieve these objectives, a two stage factorial design of oscillation cutting experiments with five levels of the oscillation angle and frequency was conducted.

The fuzzy logic has been used to control the air pressure in the vessel using matlab as programming platform and the results are compared with that PID control. It has been demonstrated that fuzzy logic based control system is more accurate than the PID control system.

SUPERVISORY HYBRID CONTROL

A supervisory hybrid control design approach is proposed for the operation and control of a wind energy conversion and battery storage system during grid-connected and in islanded operation. A finite hybrid-automata based modeling paradigm for the system is presented. The proposed model defines the allowable operating states and inter-state transition paths managed by the supervisory control layer. The subject system has been partitioned into three independent system modules using a modular control design approach. The supervisory control layer combines and configures control schemes of the constituent modules to suite the requirements of operation during any one operating state of the system. Transition management strategies implemented through the supervisory control layer ensure smooth inter-state transitions and bumpless switching among regulators. Detailed mathematical models of the system are provided in each operating state. Frequency domain linear analysis and time domain electromagnetic transient simulations are presented for the microgrid system under steady state and dynamic operating conditions including temporary faults on the utility grid.

Owing to their distributed architecture, networked control systems are proven to be feasible in scenarios where a spatially distributed control system is required. However, basic networked control systems cannot operate over general purpose wireless networks since the stability of the system is compromised due to unbounded delays and unpredictable packet losses that are typical in the wireless medium. Approaching the wireless networked control problem from two perspectives, this book introduces a novel wireless networked control system and a realistic cooperative medium access control protocol implementation that work jointly to achieve decent control even under unbounded delay, bursts of packet loss and ambient wireless traffic. The proposed system is implemented and thoroughly evaluated on a dedicated test platform under numerous scenarios and is shown to be operational under bursts of packet loss and ambient wireless traffic levels which are intolerable for basic networked control systems. The methods covered in this book should assist in developing various wireless networked control systems and should be especially useful to practicing control engineers.

In this work the experimental study on turning of EN24 alloy steel is performed. Experiments are performed under dry, wet and cryogenic cutting conditions using uncoated tungsten carbide tool having standard geometry by varying the spindle speed (RPM) and feed (mm/rev). The experiments are performed to investigate the effect of different input parameters on tool wear (mm), surface roughness (um), tool tip temperature (oC) and tool forces i.e. feed force (Ff) and cutting force (Fc). Experimental results indicate that cryogenic cooling is one of the most favorable cooling method for turning process due to being capable of bringing considerable decline in tool wear and improvement in surface finish through control of machining temperature at the cutting zone.

Machine Vision (MV) is a broad field that is growing very rapidly and being used in every automation control system. Machine Vision is the analysis of images/pictures to extract data of interest for controlling a process or activity. This work focused on measuring the quality of the cutting knives that are moving with the speed of 45 m/s in a real time wood chipper. On the basis of that quality measurement it is decided that knives in a wood chipper should be replaced or not. While measuring the quality of knives the effect of blurring effect due to very fast motion of knives is also investigated for different exposure times. Different types of illumination sources are discussed and described that which illumination source is suitable for this type of challenging environment and application.

HVAC system discussed comprises of 100HP Electrical load and 250 tons of air conditioning load. Effectiveness of introduced SCADA system can be judged by the saving rate of 96% at a negligible operational cost of 3%. Discussed SCADA system is based on innovative use of readily available components for inexpensive development. The research applies an inductive approach in qualitative semi-structured interview and grounded theory as a method of analyzing the data collected from purposefully sampled small and medium size enterprises in Umea, Sweden. The major features of effective internal control system that emerged from this study are found to be sound control environment, comprehensive risk assessment processes, rigorous operational control activities, effective information and communication system, and efficient monitoring and evaluation system.
